Dental Emergencies can arise at any time, any place. It is considered to be a dental emergency when a problem is potentially life-threatening and needs immediate attention.

The problems can include continuous tissue bleeding, severe pain, or infection in the gums and toothaches. Emergencies can be an immensely stressful and anxious time for adults and children, especially when there is uncertainty of the problem.

What is considered to be a Dental Emergency?

Although a comprehensive dental hygiene routine can help keep these situations at bay, dental emergencies can still happen. If you are tackling a dental emergency, time is of the essence to prevent the problem from getting worse. Some of the common dental emergencies include:

  • Swollen Cheek or Mouth: There are multiple reasons that can be responsible for a swollen cheek or mouth. It could occur due to an infection in the gums, or a wisdom tooth needs to be extracted. In such conditions, it is best to avail of emergency treatment.
  • A Missing Tooth:Missing teeth can cause a lot of problems in the long term. It’s essential to get them replaced at the earliest to avoid problems like misalignment and facial aesthetics. Many options are available, such as a dental implant or bridge that can restore your tooth functionality and appearance.
  • Toothache:  If you suffer pain or discomfort in your tooth, it is usually recommended that you seek emergency care instead of enduring the pain. Generally, a toothache could be an indication of an abscessed tooth that has to be extracted immediately.
  • A Loose Tooth: It can be caused by a recent facial injury or gum disease. In such situations seeking emergency care can help salvage the tooth by taking the certain remedial measure. This could include protecting the tooth with restorations such as a crown in order to strengthen it. It is crucial not to lose a tooth if it could be helped.
  • Jaw Pain:Pain in the jaw could be associated with a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD). TMJ disorders take place when the jaw becomes misaligned due to a trauma or a pre-existing condition.
  • Abscessed Tooth: A dental abscess is a possibly life-threatening condition in which a pocket of pus in the tooth has caused an infection. A tooth abscess symptoms can include fever, tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, persistent toothache, swelling in the face, lymph nodes in the neck, or pimples on the gums near the infected tooth region. This infection can spread into the jaw, surrounding tissues, and other parts of the body. Hence it becomes crucial that you should take emergency treatment.
